This doctoral thesis is based on the new theoretical assumptions and the operational instruments conveyed by the studies in materialities of communication, culture and literature. The innovative methodological and scientific approach regarding the literary and interart studies that the Program of the Advanced Studies in the Materialities of Literature has been proposing allowed the development of a research work centred in the phenomena of interaction between text and visuality in Luso-Brazilian Baroque. This work aims, therefore, to study the semantic value and the expressivity of the elements of the text’s materiality, valuing particularly the way the signs are designed and displayed in the inscription surface, as well as the mechanisms that determine their reception and interpretation, which are inherent to the visual culture and to the literary production of this historical and artistic period. Being more specific, this study gives emphasis to the typographic, iconic, semantic, pictorial, formal and rhetorical elements that interfere in the cognitive experience of reading. The interrelation between materialities of literature, arts and culture enabled me to produce a series of inferences regarding the communicative dimension of texts and their expressive and symbolic configuration. Therefore, it was necessary to consider the elements of the non-hermeneutical field other than those from the hermeneutical field, in order to analyse the impact of the spectacular aspects in the individuals and the performative dimension of the signs, by summoning to this study the concept of “presence” as Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht has defined it. This investigation was based on the imago mortis, a concept reflected in the materiality of a considerable variety of texts, recognized early on as a pillar of Christian anthropology in the Western culture, which carries an aesthetic and also an ethic meaning. Starting from the analysis of the influence of preceptive works on the Baroque authors of the Luso-brazilian perimeter, I demonstrate that the relation between ikon and logos constitutes an efficient logical rhetorical approach in the concretization of the faculties of wit and inventiveness. To this purpose, it was selected a corpus in which visuality and the theme of death, besides a constellation of other parallel themes, were associated. According to these guidelines, the research covered various literary and artistic genres, manuscript and printed, standing out visual texts, poesia artificiosa and Emblematics, considering chiefly the material components that integrate the “book’s mechanism”. The research was developed within a wide framework, which had necessarily to consider the History of book, of engraving and of its reproduction techniques, in addition to the aesthetical, literary, historical, social and cultural dimensions that are related to the laudatio funebris in the Baroque period.
