The separation of commingled human remains poses a special challenge for Forensic Anthropology, given the circumstances in which skeletons are often found as incomplete, broken and commingled. While there are several methods to make the estimate the minimum number of individuals, to the skull there is not a standard procedure. This research aims to quantify the likelihood of a given jaw may belong to a given skull from the morphometric analysis of the bones of the temporomandibular joint, contributing to a better individualization of human remains and more reliable calculation of the minimum number of individuals. The sample size was 109 skulls, 58 males and 51 females with a mean age of 33.3 years (sd = 11.5). The identified skulls are analyzed from the Collections of the Anthropological Museum of the University of Coimbra. While for males 4 linear regression equations were developed (95% CI, 85% agreement), for females 2 equations were proposed (95% CI, 90% agreement). These equations quantify the probability of a given jaw belong to a given skull. This method has advantages because it is easy and convenient to use and can be easily reproducible. Besides, it contribut to a better individualization of human remains in cases of Forensic Anthropology.
