In the past few years it has been seen a growing interest in research about Third Generation Therapies, in which Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is included (ACT; Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999). In this context, studies and measures assessing acceptance across many psychological conditions are emerging. The present study aims to adapt and validate a psychological questionnaire measuring acceptance and action in test anxiety (TA-AAQ), based on the Social Anxiety – Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (SA-AAQ; MacKenzie & Kocovski, 2010). Psychometric properties of the scale were studied in a college student sample (N=317), aged between 18 and 30 years old. TA-AAQ revealed a two factor structure: Acceptance and Action with Commitment that explained 57.2% of the total variance. TA-AAQ appears to be a reliable instrument presenting a good internal consistency in the scale’s total (α=.93) and in Acceptance (α=.94) and Action (α=.79) factors. The scale also revealed a good temporal stability and convergent validity. This new questionnaire is the only specific measure that is available to evaluate acceptance in test anxiety. Therefore, it may an important tool for future studies that can bring meaningful contribution to research and clinical practice.
Perfectionists tend to present higher levels of test anxiety once they establish excessively high standards extremely difficult to reach. It is expected that negative automatic thoughts will occur to these individuals, and that they will engage in irrelevant cognitive activities before, during and after the test, which will interfere with their performance, and that are accompanied by physiological sensations related to anxiety. Acceptance of these automatic thoughts and negative feelings (i.e., being available to experience these inner experience without defense) as they are occurring (Hayes, 1994), as well as accepting to be less than perfect, may contribute to reduce anxiety and improve performance in exams. However, the literature corroborating this relationship is scarce. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to explore the relationship between test anxiety, perfectionism and acceptance, being the first study to analyze the mediator role of acceptance in the relationship between perfectionism and test anxiety . The sample was composed of college students (N=308). The results corroborated the stablished hypotheses. Significant correlations between exam anxiety, perfectionism and acceptance were found. Results also showed that acceptance had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between perfectionism and test anxiety and in the relationship between perfectionism and the perception of test anxiety interference. Beyond these results, acceptance reveled a mediating role in the relationship between test anxiety and the perception of interference resulting from anxiety, showing that the perception of interference does not depend, exclusively, on test anxiety. These results show the importance of perfectionism and acceptance in understanding test anxiety, pointing to the importance of approaching and targeting these constructs in test anxiety intervention.
