The search for excellence in the pulp and paper industry is increasing because the international market has become much more competitive. This requires a meticulous attention to the best available techniques as well as the research for new materials and processes that increase competitiveness. Knowing that PCC is an important additive in the paper structure, namely because it is substantially cheaper than fibres, it is important to be able to increase the percentage of this material without losing mechanical properties. In this context, nanotechnology presents a chance to get economic advantage on paper production through the incorporation of a new material, the nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC). The nanofibrillated cellulose is a material that has gained much interest over the last decade due to their unique properties, associated to the nanometer scale. Properties such as high crystallinity, rigidity (Young’s modulus), tensile strength, specific surface area and transparency as well as their abundance, and the fact that it is a biodegradable and renewable material have led to many application studies as a reinforcing material in several areas, such as electronics , food, textile, medicine and aeronautics. However the application of this new material in the paper industry is still very small compared with the other mentioned areas. The present work consisted in the production and characterization of NFC produced from bleached kraft pulp from Eucalyptus globulus and aiming at its application on the production of laboratory paper handsheets with the objective of evaluating the influence of NFC on drainability, retention of mineral fillers and tensile strength of those handsheets. NFC were produced by oxidation of the fibres followed by mechanical homogenization at high pressure. Different operating conditions gave rise to different NFC samples and therefore they were characterized in order to select the most promising for paper production. The selected NFC was obtained by oxidation with 6 mmol of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and homogenization with 10 passages in the homogenizer because it corresponded to an high production yield (80%), an high carboxyl groups concentration (1.109 mmol / g cellulose), a low degree of polymerization (158) and a reduced size (obtained by PCS - Photon Correlation Spectroscopy) with a distribution mode of 51.8 nm. The handsheets were produced with a bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp, precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), NFC, cationic polyacrylamide and cationic starch. Through tensile strength, drainability and PCC retention tests, the influences of the degree of fibres refining, the PCC content and the NFC content were evaluated. It was concluded, in agreement with other published studies, that the presence of NFC decreases drainability and increases the mechanical strength of the produced paper. Besides, with the fibres, NFC and fillers used, it was rerified that, in the presence of PCC is possible to reduce the refining energy of fibres in the same ratio than the increase of the amount of NFC, for the same value of drainability (°SR). This does not happen with the tensile index and breaking length and it is always necessary to refine the fibres although the incorporation of NFC decreases the refining energy required. The NFC influence on the strength properties in higher for the smaller fibre refining degree. For the same degree of refining, the tensile index is higher for the higher percentages of NFC. The increasing of tensile with refining is more pronounced for the larger amounts of NFC. The addition of NFC improve the retention of PCC and allows to obtain very high retentions of this component, near to 100%. However even in the presence of NFC, increasing the PCC content decreases the mechanical properties of the handsheets. The realization of most trials took place in LEPAMAP (Laboratori d’Enginyeria Paperera i Materials Polímers) at the University of Girona, under the ERASMUS Placements Program and the biometric characterization of NFC was carried out at University of Coimbra.
