Popularity of university rankings is the reflex of the changes that have been occurring in the last years in higher education. After their appearance in 2003/2004, the global classifications of universities with higher prestige have revolutionized the higher education scope and, since then, the ARWU, THE and QS rankings have been generating important positive consequences. The universities rankings are indicators used to evaluate the universities results in a simple, synthetic and comprehensive way, making it easier to draw a comparison between universities. Based on these reasons, we consider convenient to know with more detail these three international university rankings as well as to do a more detailed study on its impact on Portuguese institutions. Our aim, firstly and briefly, is to present each one of these three international rankings (ARWU, THE, and QS), essentially its methodology and indicators. Secondly, we analyze the Portuguese representation, namely its position, points, profile and under-rankings. To do so, we make an intensive ranking analysis in order to understand and to reflect upon the Portuguese reality. In which areas are the Portuguese universities in better placed? In which areas do they get more points? Can we evaluate the whole Portuguese university system with the international rankings or only some universities? These are some of the issues we want to elucidate and give some strategic recommendations for a continuous improvement of the Portuguese universities performance.por
