The present investigation had as its main goal the work of the Portuguese artist Daniel Blaufuks in the light of Marianne Hirsch’s concept of “postmemory”. In her formulation, Hirsch proposes a certain number of assumptions which build and define a theoretical frame used as an analytic tool on some artistic and literary productions. It was, precisely, such theoretical corpus that was used to investigate and frame the artistic work of Blaufuks, in order to test simultaneously the validity and problems of the concept coined by Hirsch. As it turns out, the analised works confirm the main conceptual assumptions in relation to postmemory work, which justifies including the Portuguese artist in a postmemorial generation. The production of this generation addresses historical and traumatic events and is characterized, for instance, by the use of the photographic image in its artistic expression. Photography operates as a medium for the transmission of trauma which was received through their parents and/or grandparents, witnesses of the catastrophic events that caused the trauma. W.G. Sebald and Georges Perec, two writers who also belong to a postmemorial generation, have had a strong influence on the work of Daniel Blaufuks. The aim was to highlight common elements and establish connections among the three authors that showed their postmemorial artistic and literary strategies. A major element is an idea of family memory through the use and artistic reinvention of the family album and the importance given to particular objects, in which photography is inscribed and which assume the status of testimonial objects. Another important theme is an idea of the archive articulated through an “archive impulse” that is connected not only to a presence of the past in the present, but also to a confrontation of the individual with an inner search. At this intersection between writing and image, biography and memory, archive and displacement, concepts were clarified and readings were made that allowed to refine and expand the theoretical assumptions of postmemory work.
