Abstract: O presente trabalho visa lançar um olhar crítico e reformador sobre o conceito de Loucura, desordem ou doença mental, dominante na Psiquiatria do século XX, que assenta na transposição para a vida mental, da ideia mecanicista da tradição cartesiana, que defende que o funcionamento do corpo se assemelha ao de uma máquina, tese, que faz da consciência, uma coisa, e do comportamento, um reflexo, ambos, explicados pelas mesmas leis do organismo biológico. Depois de introduzido um resumo histórico-filosófico desta disciplina, apresentamos o filósofo George W. F. Hegel, sustento da argumentação de que a loucura não se explica exclusivamente como disfunção fisiológica, a não ser nos casos de deficiência neurológica, antes, e caso não persista, é um momento, ou fase, constitutivo da actividade dialéctica, racional, do espírito, cuja liberdade para se auto-conceber não está, afinal, pré-determinada nas leis da neurofisiologia, doutrina, que verificamos na sua Antropologia, justamente, o estádio psíquico onde o espírito, da sua subordinação à corporalidade, inconsciente, se desenvolve buscando o auto-conhecimento, a consciência, que atinge depois de ter atravessado um momento de conflito interno, a loucura, efectivando-se, então, como Eu (ego). Na segunda parte do trabalho, na fenomenologia de Merleau-Ponty, um registro diferente do de Hegel, mas interior ao tema, consolidamos, agora já no século XX, que a consciência humana, não se reduz à caixa craniana, nem o comportamento a uma série de reacções automáticas, típicas do pensamento causal, enunciações que completamos com a exposição e reivindicações críticas por uma tradição de outros autores que estudam este tema contemporâneo da relação entre a Filosofia e a Psiquiatria.
