This research analyses the role of websites in destination image formation, understood on the perspective of communication sciences from the theory of medium and on public relations from the theory of dialogism, based on the co-creational paradigm. The study is divided into three major parts. The first two parts, devoted to a comprehensive literature review, have a focus on the theoretical approach to the main axes related to the theory of medium, the dialogic perspective, the dialogic rhetorical and theoretical approach to the image of destinations. This analysis supports the development of a online image formation conceptual schema, proposed in the third part, where is also presented the methodology to be followed in the development of empirical research. The third part, concerning the empirical study involved the collection of data through a content analysis, which was divided into three stages: in the first two we proceeded to a quantitative analysis of the data collected through content analysis of the websites of entities of Portugal as a tourism destination and of the photographs published by entities and shared by tourists, and on a third moment, we proceeded to a qualitative analysis of the photographs published and shared in the selected sites. The study results confirmed that the official tourism entities adopt the dialogical principles to a greater degree than non-officials. There is also greater adoption of dialogic principles relating to the technical dimension than with the dialogical dimension and a relationship between greater adoption of dialogic link and the openness of the organization to the possibility of photographic sharing by tourists. The analysis of the elements of the photographs disseminated by the entities on its websites and of pictures that are shared by tourists in those sites reflect a similarity in the representations. Qualitative analysis tells us that early experience through imagery designed by entities in the photographs published on the websites correspond to the perceived image shown by the photographs that tourists take and share. We confirm the thesis proposal that the websites through its dialogical capacity, enable the establishment of communicative horizons shared between the organizations and tourists, reflecting the formation of a holistic destination image. The study seeks to establish itself as a contribution to the body of knowledge of public relations and communications in new technological environments and have implications in the areas of practice of the organizations communication, particularly in communication of destinations.
