The purpose of this survey is to understand the relationship between alcohol and/or drug consumption habits, beliefs linked to violent partnership behavior, and the perpetuation of violence in dating relationships within a sample of students from the University of Coimbra. These relationships were studied considering the effect of gender and areas of study. The results of this investigation show low acceptance of relationship violence among the students, although a fraction of the sample seems to accept violent behaviours in relationships more easily depending on the context of the act. Regarding the alcohol and other drugs abuse, the sample shows some alarming levels, specifically on alcohol consumption. The students in an intimate partnership relation show some worrying indices of violence, despite the acts of violence being minor. The gender and area of study showed significant differences both in substance use and in representations of intimate violence. In intimate partnership violence, differences are only obvious when it comes to area of study and there are almost no gender differences (only in minor sexual coercion). The study shows that it is in the high-risk drinkers that are found greater beliefs of aggression legitimacy. It is also evident that the subjects who are violent in intimate partnership relations are more likely to have beliefs about a greater legitimacy of violence. Finally it was shown that 24.5% of the variance of social representations of violence is explained by substance use, history of family violence and gender.pt
