O Leste em Portugal: a integração de imigrantes ucranianos e a educação de adultos

Abstract

No final do século XX, Portugal deixou de ser apenas um país de emigração para se tornar também um país de imigração e acolhimento de cidadãos estrangeiros, que procuram sobretudo alcançar melhores condições de vida. Um dos grupos de imigrantes que mais aumentou nos últimos anos foi o dos imigrantes da Europa de Leste, provenientes da ex-URSS, devido aos graves problemas económicos e sociais que aí se verificaram, sendo os cidadãos de nacionalidade ucraniana os que mais procuraram Portugal para se fixar. É relevante compreendermos como se tem processado a integração destes imigrantes na sociedade portuguesa, em particular os adultos em idade ativa. Um dos fatores que poderá contribuir para a integração destes imigrantes é a inserção em programas educativos para adultos, nomeadamente a frequência de cursos de educação e formação no âmbito da Iniciativa Novas Oportunidades. Ao longo deste estudo pretende-se perceber como é que estes imigrantes se têm integrado na nossa sociedade, através da inserção em percursos educativos para adultos promovidos pelo estado português, que deverão constituir mecanismos facilitadores, propiciando o desenvolvimento das suas aprendizagens e da sua inclusão social. A investigação é de natureza qualitativa, sendo que os dados foram recolhidos através de uma entrevista semiestruturada realizada com seis participantes ucranianos. A realização desta investigação permitiu aferir a importância da frequência destes cursos na integração social dos imigrantes ucranianos que, em conjunto com vários fatores positivos, permitiram a fixação de residência em Portugal, que já consideram como ao seu país.

By the end of the twentieth century, Portugal stopped being only an emigration country and had also become an immigration and welcoming country for foreign citizens, which particularly try to reach better life conditions. One group of immigrants that has increased in the past years were the Eastern Europeans, from former USSR, due to severe economic and social issues that occurred there, being the Ukrainians citizens the one’s that most select Portugal for living. It’s relevant to understand how these immigrants’ integration has been happening in the Portuguese society, particular as far as the adults in active age had concerned. One of the factors that may contribute to these immigrants integration is the attendance of adults educational programs, specifically the frequency of education and training courses integrate in the New Opportunities Program. During this research our aim is to comprehend how these immigrants have been integrated in our society, through the insertion in adult education paths promoted by Portuguese State that should represent a straightforward mechanism, leading to the development of their learning process as well as their social inclusion. The research has a qualitative nature, as the data were collected through a semistructured interview with six Ukrainians participants. With this research we could understand the importance of these courses in the Ukrainian immigrants’ social integration that allowed (with other positive factors) that they have continued living in Portugal, country that they already see as theirs.
