Representações pictóricas nos manuais escolares de Ciências Naturais do 7º ano: Terra – Um planeta com vida e Dinâmica interna da Terra

Abstract

As representações pictóricas são muito valorizadas nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem. Este estudo, realizado no âmbito do mestrado em ensino da Biologia e Geologia no 3º ciclo do ensino básico e no ensino secundário, baseia-se na análise de conteúdo das representações pictóricas (fotografias, ilustrações, gráficos e mapas) de um tema de Biologia, Terra - um planeta com vida, e outro de Geologia, Dinâmica interna da Terra, em seis manuais escolares de Ciências Naturais do 7º ano de escolaridade (três de edições de 2012 e três de edições anteriores). Os objetivos deste estudo foram analisar a relação entre a superfície de texto e de imagem, analisar morfológica e funcionalmente as representações pictóricas, verificar se estas se encontram devidamente legendadas, com escala, indicação da fonte, e comparar as representações dos manuais editados em 2012 com os anteriores. Nas diferentes edições foram analisadas 489 imagens num total de 281 páginas. De uma forma geral, os resultados mostraram que, nos manuais escolares editados em 2012, houve um aumento do número de representações pictóricas. Num total de 281 páginas, a maioria (163) tem a superfície de texto inferior à superfície de imagem e o tipo de representação mais frequente é a fotografia com 244 representações. Relativamente à análise funcional, a função explicativa é a mais comum em todos os manuais. Na sua maioria, as representações pictóricas encontram-se legendadas, mas sem a indicação da escala e da fonte. O aumento da utilização das representações pictóricas nos manuais escolares poderá estar relacionado com o avanço tecnológico e com as diversas possibilidades de impressão gráfica que valorizam e favorecem os manuais. Com este estudo pretende contribuir-se para uma melhoria de futuras edições de manuais escolares relativamente às representações pictóricas.

Pictorial representations are highly valued in the processes of teaching and learning. This study, conducted under the master's degree in teaching of Biology and Geology in the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education, is based on content analysis of pictorial representations (photographs, illustrations, charts, and maps) of a theme of biology, Earth - a planet with life, and one of Geology, internal dynamics of the Earth in six textbooks of Natural Sciences of the 7th grade (three from 2012 editions and three from previous editions). The objectives of this study were to analyze the relationship between the surface text and image, analyze morphologically and functionally depictions, check whether they are properly labeled with scale and indication of the source, and compare the representations of the textbooks published in 2012 with the previous. In the different editions, 489 images were analyzed in 281 pages. In general, the results showed that in textbooks published in 2012, there was an increase in the number of pictorial representations. In a total of 281 pages, the text surface of the majority (163) is lower than the image surface and the most frequent type of representation is the photograph with 244 representations. Regarding the functional analysis, the explanatory function is the most common in all the textbooks. Most pictorial representations are labeled, but without indication of the scale or source. The increase of the use of pictorial representations in textbooks may be related to the technological advance and the various possibilities of the printing that value and enhance the textbooks. This study is intended to contribute for the improvement of the pictorial representations of the future textbook editions.
