The skeletons and teeth are sources of anthropological value that can determine the circumstances that humans lived. The objective of this study is to obtain as much conclusive information, as possible, about the life and death of individuals buried at the burial site in the Antiga Igreja da Sé, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The study was based on demographic and pathologic characteristics of samples analyzed. Salvador was the capital of the Portuguese empire in the Americas until 1763. In a social urban standpoint, the Igreja da Sé was a landmark for religion, political and social gatherings. The main reason for this is related to the strategic geographical location, so the church was even used as a fort during the Dutch invasion. The burial sites of the church were located on the grounds of the church and beneath the floor. The placement of the skeletons served as archeological evidence of possible social status. One hundred fifty-nine (159) skeletons were analyzed. From those, thirty-nine (39) were found under the floor in the central area and in close proximity to the exterior walls. Additionally, one hundred twenty (120) were found on the grounds in close proximity to the church building. A total amount of thirty-one (31) individuals had dental mutilation, which could indicate their African descent. Regarding age, only three (3) individuals, a man and two women, died at an age older than fifty (50). Demographic analysis showed that twenty-five percent (25%) of those individuals were younger than nineteen (19) and from those seven percent (7%) were children younger than six (6). From the total of individuals studied, fifty-one point five percent (51.5%) were adults. Most of the individuals with no dental mutilation died between the ages of twenty (20) and twenty-nine (29), being mostly male individuals (fifty-two point five percent). In contrast, the ones with dental mutilation died between the ages of thirty (30) and fifty (50), being mostly middle age women. The heterogeneous nature of the samples was a determining factor to the identification of ancestry of the population. Eight (8) individuals with dental mutilation were negoids considered an important evidence to infer the African origin of those individuals associated to the slavery traffic during the colonial era in Brazil. The robusticity was evident among fourteen percent (14%) of the individuals buried on the grounds of the church. Among children and teenage individuals, the evidence of iron deficiency anemia and/or genetic anemia (sickle-cell anemia) were significant. Signs of non-specific infections were evident in all age categories. Cases of osteomyelitis and periostitis associated with fractures were more often among individuals buried in the interior of the church. There was a middle age man buried on the grounds of the church with evidence of meningitis. Individuals with no dental mutilation were found with traumatic lesions. Those lesions are represented by seven cases of fractures, mostly in the upper limbs, a firearm injury and three cranial lesions. The mentioned injuries could be associated to high levels of physical activity, accidents or violence. Evidence of metabolic disease associated with micro-trauma was found in thirteen (13) cases of osteochondritis dissecans in individuals buried in both locations. There were differences in the degree and frequency in the development of the lesions in the entheses related to age and gender. The lesions increased with age, especially in the upper limbs. Among the individuals with no dental mutilation, the injuries were more often among male individuals. However, among individuals with dental mutilation, there is little significant difference between genders. The degenerative joint disease was more often among individuals buried on the grounds of the church and the Schmorl’s node were found just in them. Considering this evidence, it is possible to draw a conclusion that those individuals were under intense physical activity and tremendous exertion of force. The dental loss before death was higher among individuals with no dental mutilation, regardless of the place of burial. In the total analysis, the posterior teeth showed a higher number of carious lesions and periodontal lesions. Among the individuals buried inside the church, there was no case of periodontitis at advanced stages and the cases of carious lesions were mostly found among the anterior teeth. Among the individuals buried on the grounds of the church, it was evident that gender was a determining factor to the frequency of carious lesions. The dental attrition was more evident among the posterior teeth. The results showed that age was not a factor to determine dental attrition among individuals buried on the ground of the church, but gender. The amount of samples did not allow for the comparative statistical analysis of any significance among the two sample groups. However, there were little differences in relation to the life span of those individuals, the susceptibility to diseases and the subjects physical health.
