The work presented here focused on a study that addresses the issue of gender and leadership in organizations of modern society. This work was elaborated for the Master in Management of Vocational and Educational Administration, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra. In this sense, it seemed interesting to study the relationship between gender and leadership from the point of view of a woman leader already with some years of experience in the working world, since the functions associated with professional leadership positions tended to be traditionally associated with the positions held by men. If, on the one hand, the known gender stereotypes may still hold back girls and young women in professions conventionally seen as more typical of the other sex, taking away their freedom in terms of vocational choices, on the other hand, it is likely that society is still not fully prepared to promote the effective exercise of leadership of women, especially in the public domain, it included the world of work. We have chosen in this work by an investigation of a qualitative nature, conducting a single case study, having been a semi-structured interview technique to collect data in different privileged moments of contact with the participant. The case chosen for this work was a woman leader of an organization several years ago, which was heard in direct discourse to speak of her experiences as a professional. The main objectives of the study were based on the understanding of being a woman and a leader of an organization and the perception that the participant had about her exercise of that leadership. The information gathered during the interviews were later submitted to a content analysis, in order to be interpreted. Concerning the main conclusions we have reached, we emphasize the fact that, to lead a team, it is fundamental to be with people, promoting teamwork, entrepreneurship and pro activity, working around collective goals and fostering self-knowledge. However, the fact of being a woman has its limitations in terms of the leadership of an organization, particularly in terms of time available and expended, since this, in spite of their increasing participation in public life continues to be largely responsible for chores and family support. To circumvent this obstacle, it is necessary, in our view, to continue to invest in the establishment of policies and action strategies that promote, among other things, a - x - greater sharing of tasks to be performed by men and women in the private domain, so that the professional performance by women in leadership roles or others are not held back by her responsibilities in the field of domesticity.
