No âmbito do bem-estar subjetivo utilizou-se a Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) validada por Simões (1992) e a Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) - versão portuguesa desenvolvida por Simões (1993).
This work constitutes a further contribution to the study of subjective well-being in (un)employment trajectories within the person-environment fit models. The project presents a complementary approach to Holland’s (1959, 1985, 1997) model. It was based on the studies of Haase and colleagues (2008, 2010, 2011) seeking to understand the cognitive dimensions related to five areas of information processing (information overload, interpersonal overload, change overload, time structure and activity structure) underlying the person-environment fit, assuming the relevance of temperament. We also explored the subjective well-being in general and in the work domain (satisfaction, success and longevity) within the person-environment fit and other constructs including characteristics of temperament, information processing capacities and occupational type according to Holland, as well as sociodemographic variables. Finally, we proceeded to the analysis of subjective well-being in unemployment, in an exploratory propose, suggesting directions for future investigations. Participated in the quantitative empirical study, 562 employed adults and 73 unemployed. The distribution of employed adults according to Holland’s types was: 15 electricians (realistic), 87 pharmacists (investigative), 88 journalists (artistic), 185 teachers (social), 88 real estate agents (enterprising) and 99 accountants (conventional). Data collection took place from November 2009 to May 2011 and contacts were established personally and by e-mail, by convenience and through random survey of institutions, applying the instruments in print and digital forms. A questionnaire was constructed for general and professional characterization of the sample. Within the framework of subjective well-being we used the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) validated by Simões (1992) and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) - portuguese version developed by Simões (1993). Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) - short version of Weiss, Dawis, England and Löfquist (1967) adapted to the portuguese population by Ferreira Fernandes, Haase and Santos (2009) was used to access job satisfaction. The instruments from Haase and his colleagues work were: Pavlovian Temperament Survey (PTS-AmE) of Newberry et al. (1997); Career Preference Inventory (Haase et al., 2008); Inventory of Environmental Preferences - Polychronicity Index (PI) - short version of Haase, Lee and Banks (1979); and Magnitude Estimation Scaling Tasks (Haase et al., 2008) with 42 professions distributed among the Holland’s six occupational types. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM 20) assuming the confidence level of 95% as reference value in the Social Sciences. The relevant and appropriate techniques were used depending on the variables under analysis and hypotheses outlined. We obtained relative variability in the information processing demand in five domains on the 42 occupations and six types. The main results with statistical significance related to the first objective were: (1) the existence of differences in information processing capacities depending on the occupation and not on the occupational type; (2) the temperamental dimensions differentiated participants within occupation and occupational type; and (3) the association between temperament characteristics and information processing capacities. We advanced to the second stage of the study given the statistically significant correlations between variables of subjective well-being in general and in the work domain. In addition we found relevant contributions to Holland’s perspective on the person-environment fit and its relationship with job satisfaction. Salary seems to be important for the success but employment longevity was higher in participants with lower levels of fit. It was also possible to verify that: (1) the occupational type was significant in well-being in the work domain, and in interaction with the fit, retained its importance in employment longevity; and (2) the characteristics of temperament seem to have more relevance than the information processing capacities on intrinsic satisfaction with work. There were statistically significant results within personal and contextual variables including sociodemographic in subjective well-being in general and in the work domain. Related to the third objective, results suggest that: (1) the unemployment situation is related with lower levels of subjective well-being; (2) the situation regarding employment in interaction with characteristics of temperament, as well as with information processing capacities was significant in subjective well-being results; and (3) individuals without unemployment social benefits showed more negative affectivity. The study ended up exploring some variables within occupational groups in study, noting that: (1) teachers showed lower results in occupational prestige; (2) unemployed participants evaluated work as more important than all other participants; and (3) it seems that there is more pessimism within the future perspective in teachers. The analysis of the results allowed us to suggest lines of research given the methodological limitations specifically concerned with the sample used. Framed in the growing positive perspective of psychology, this study adds contributions to the understanding of subjective well-being in employment and unemployment, particularly through models of person-environment fit.
