dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that the gestational period is related to the decrease of bone mass in women who have died during their reproductive age. Thus, cortical and densitometric parameters of bone mass were evaluated in a female sample from the Identified Skeletal Collection of the University of Coimbra. The average values of the cortical index of the second metacarpal (CI) and bone mineral density (BMD) in the neck of the femur observed in women who died due to complications related to childbirth (ICD-10: 15; N = 4) and women who have died due to other causes (N = 24) are similar. Mean CI in women who have died due to puerperal complications is 50.4 (DP = 14.37; 95% CI 27.51 – 73.23); in the other women is 54.47 (SD = 9.48; 95% CI: 50.47 – 58.48). BMD in the «neck» of the femur (ICD-10: 15: 0.843; SD = 0.15; 95% CI: 0.611 – 1.075 / Other causes of death: 0.826; DP = 0.11; 95% CI: 0.778) is also very similar in the two groups. Although the sample is small, the results suggest that pregnancy may not conclusively affect bone mass in young skeletal women from archaeological contexts. | - |
