A brucelose em paleopatologia: um estudo de caso proveniente da necrópole Cristã de Cacela Velha

Abstract

The theoretical and practical ethos of the paleopathological perspective can reveal important aspects of the diachronic evolution of chronic pathological processes that affect the skeleton. With this perspective in mind, we present here a composite picture of brucellosis (Malta’s fever) based on data from biological anthropology, history of medicine, archaeology and clinical medicine. The chief purposes of this article include the construction of a synthesis that incorporates the clinical definition, the aetiology and the symptoms of brucellosis, examples of the disease in the paleopathological literature, and discussion of a possible case from a Christian necropolis (13th-16th centuries) located in Cacela Velha (Algarve, Portugal).

Tendo como pano de fundo a perspectiva paleopatológica, cujo ethos teórico e prático pode clarificar aspectos importantes da evolução diacrónica de diversos processos patológicos crónicos que afectam o esqueleto, pretende-se reunir neste ensaio um conjunto de dados relativos à brucelose, provindos de diferentes áreas do conhecimento, tais como a antropologia biológica, a história da medicina, a arqueologia e a medicina clínica. Desse modo, os propósitos cardinais deste trabalho incluem a construção de uma síntese que considere a definição clínica, a etiologia e a sintomatologia da brucelose, as referências à doença na literatura paleopatológica e, ainda, o estudo de um possível caso proveniente de uma necrópole Cristã dos sécs. XIII-XVI, localizada em Cacela Velha (Algarve, Portugal).
