| pt |
dc.description.abstract | This study mainly aims to compare involuntary clients with voluntary clients at the establishment of therapeutic alliance in the context of couple and family therapy. The achievement of this overall objective was operacionalized using the System for Observing Family Therapy Alliances (SOFTA - Friedlander, Escudero, & Heatherington, 2006), applied to a Portuguese sample of twenty involuntary families and twenty voluntary families. The results show that patients who sought therapy voluntarily build stronger alliances than involuntary clients, being that the differences in the strength of the alliance remain throughout the therapeutic process. However, from the initial phase until the middle/end of the process, the alliance evolves negatively in both types of clients (particularly regarding the dimensions Safety and Shared Sense of Purpose, evaluated with SOFTA). The results are discussed from the viewpoint of the condition specificities of involuntary and mandated client, as well as from the meaning of the oscillations of the alliance in terms of intervention for each client type. | pt |
