Os bispos e o Tribunal do Santo Ofício no arquipélago de Cabo Verde : 1538-1646

Abstract

O presente estudo pretende analisar a conjuntura da entrada, implantação e enraizamento do Santo Ofício em Cabo Verde, através da relação que este estabeleceu com o episcopado, nos séculos XVI e XVII, numa perspectiva evolutiva, apresentando ganhos efectivos e o consequente fortalecimento da sua hegemonia. Observar-se-á ainda a relação entre a Inquisição e outros organismos eclesiásticos, nomeadamente o cabido, bem como com organismos seculares, tais como: o governador, o corregedor e a câmara. Por fim, abordaremos a questão da presença dos cristãos-novos em Cabo Verde e na costa da Guiné.

This study aims to analyze the situation of the entry, establishment and rooting of the Holy Office in Cape Verde, and the relationship it established with the episcopate in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in an evolutionary perspective, trying to reveal, simultaneously how this relationship contributed to the strengthening of the Holy Office hegemony in the islands. We will cope also the relation established with other ecclesiastical bodies, including the cathedral chapter as well as secular ones such as the governor, the mayor and the chamber. Finally, we discuss the question of the presence of New-Christians in Cape Verde and Guinea coast.
