Ficção e história : a figura de Uriel da Costa na obra de Karl Gutzkow

Abstract

A dissertação de Doutoramento em Literatura Alemã que aqui se apresenta, intitulada Ficção e História: A Figura de Uriel da Costa na Obra de Karl Gutzkow, constitui um estudo aprofundado da novela Der Sadducäer von Amsterdam (1834) e da tragédia Uriel Acosta (1846), incidindo especialmente sobre o tratamento ficcional dado à figurado referido livre-pensador judeo-português, bem como à temática histórica correlacionada, aspectos até aqui amplamente negligenciados pela crítica literária. O trabalho, de dimensão interdisciplinar, inicia-se com um conjunto de reflexões introdutórias (I) sobre a problemática da representação narrativa e dramática da matéria histórica na obra de arte literária, sem descurar a fundamentação da perspectiva teórico metodológica adoptada. Seguidamente, abordam-se os principais aspectos e etapas da (re)construção tanto historiográfica como literária da vida e do pensamento de Uriel da Costa, desde 1644 até aos nossos dias (II), procurando identificar e caracterizar os testemunhos de recepção na Alemanha até à época da Restauração, os quais constituem as fontes de Karl Gutzkow. A parte principal da dissertação (III) começa por se debruçar sobre a posição do autor no panorama sociopolítico, cultural e literário dos anos 30 e 40 do século XIX, não apenas no que concerne ao ideário estético-literário e ideológico do autor, mas também ao modelo de ficção histórica por ele preconizado. Os dois capítulos centrais (III.2 e III.3), dedicados ao estudo da ficcionalização da História no supramencionado corpus, abordam primeiro a génese e a recepção de cada uma das obras em apreço (III.2.1/2 e III.3.1/2). De seguida, tais capítulos centram-se, respectivamente, na análise da novela da Jovem Alemanha (III.2.3) e da tragédia inserida no período do Vormärz (III.3.3), em especial no que diz respeito às estratégias de apropriação e representação ficcional do caso histórico de Uriel da Costa. Tanto na novela Der Sadducäer von Amsterdam como no drama Uriel Acosta, a reescrita do histórico conflito que opôs a figura do luso-judeu converso à ortodoxia judaica de Amesterdão comprovam uma intensa simbiose entre dados historiográficos e fictícios. Todavia, a selecção e configuração literária das matérias históricas na novela e na tragédia em verso revelam também consideráveis diferenças, devidas, por um lado, a peculiaridades genológicas e, por outro, ao específico enquadramento histórico e cultural dos textos em causa.

The present Doctoral dissertation in German Literature is entitled Fiction and History: the Character of Uriel da Costa in Karl Gutzkow´s Literary Work. It is centred on two case studies: of the novella Der Sadducäer von Amsterdam (1834) and of the tragedy Uriel Acosta (1846). My approach is focused on the fictional treatment of the Jewish-Portuguese free-thinker and on correlated historical issues, which have been largely neglected by literary scholars so far. According to its interdisciplinary nature, this study begins with an introduction (I) to the question of narrative and dramatic representation of historical materials in literary texts and a discussion of theoretical and methodological issues that this kind of representation necessarily implies. By going through the most significant aspects and steps of the historiographical and literary(re)construction of Uriel da Costa´s life and thought since 1644 (II), it attempts to gain an insight into the texts and documents which were published until the Restoration period in Germany and used as sources by Karl Gutzkow. The main part of the dissertation (III) begins by dealing with the German author´s position in the social,cultural and literary scene of the 1830s and 1840s, taking into account not only his ideological commitment and his literary-aesthetic concepts but also the model of historical fiction he follows (III.1). The two nuclear chapters (III.2 and III.3) are both essentially centred on the analysis of the fictional rewriting of history in the corpus above mentioned; each of them starts by dealing with the production and reception of the corresponding text (III.2.1/2 and III.3.1/2). The following subchapters analyse, respectively, the Young German novella (III.2.3) and the Vormärz tragedy (III.3.3),focusing particularly on the strategies of appropriation and representation of the historical case of Uriel da Costa. The rewriting of the historical conflict between the Jewish-Portuguese converso and the Hebrew orthodoxy of Amsterdam in both the narrative Der Sadducäer von Amsterdam and the play Uriel Acosta prove to be a tight weaved symbiosis between historiographical materials and fictitious elements.However, the literary selection and configuration of historical materials in the novella and in the verse tragedy also reveal considerable differences, due, on the one hand, to genealogical peculiarities and, on the other hand, to the specific historical and cultural background of each text.
