O Projeto de Reabilitação e Expansão do Palácio de São Marcos - Definição dos Limites

Abstract

This Master’s Dissertation is part of the Project Workshop I and II course, under the theme “Rehabilitation and Expansion Project of São Marcos Palace.” This work addresses various topics, from the conception process to the representation and communication of the architectural idea and its materiality. The main objective of this study is to propose an Intervention and Rehabilitation strategy for São Marcos Palace, aiming at the articulation between the pre-existence and the new building. This historic palace, built on the ruins of a fifteenth-century monastery of the Order of St. Jerome, became the property of the Portuguese State in 1976, after the extinction of religious orders. Subsequently, in 1981, it was transferred to the University of Coimbra for scientific, cultural, and social activities. The proposed project aims to equip the new Polo IV of the University of Coimbra with facilities dedicated to agricultural and forestry sciences, comprising three main components: residential, academic, and cultural. The rehabilitation and expansion heritage have been topics addressed for centuries in architectural practice and theory. This project stands out for preserving the cultural identity and historical memory of the region, restoring a building of significant importance that, although essential for local memory, lacks infrastructure to meet contemporary needs. The dissertation is structured into four chapters: “Context”, “The Discovery of the Object”, “Guidelines for Intervening in Built Heritage”, and “The Project - Rehabilitation and Expansion of the São Marcos Palace”. Each chapter explores different elements related to the theme, from the analysis of the territory and characterization of the object of study, through theoretical reflection on heritage, to the presentation of the general intervention strategy and proposal for the programmatic organization of the existing building and the new construction.

A presente Dissertação de Mestrado insere-se na unidade curricular de Atelier de Projeto I e II, sob o tema “Projeto de Reabilitação e Ampliação do Palácio de São Marcos”. Este trabalho aborda diversas temáticas, desde o processo de conceção até à representação e comunicação da ideia arquitetónica e da sua materialidade. O objetivo central deste estudo é propor uma estratégia de Intervenção e Reabilitação para o Palácio de São Marcos, visando a articulação entre a preexistência e o novo edificado. Este Palácio histórico, erguido sobre as ruínas de um Mosteiro quatrocentista da Ordem de S. Jerónimo, tornou-se propriedade do Estado Português em 1976, após a extinção das ordens religiosas. Posteriormente, em 1981, foi cedido à Universidade de Coimbra para atividades científicas, culturais e sociais. O projeto proposto visa dotar o novo Polo IV da Universidade de Coimbra com infraestruturas dedicadas às ciências agrícolas e da floresta, contemplando três componentes principais: residencial, académica e cultural. A reabilitação e expansão do Património são temas abordados há séculos na prática e na teoria arquitetónicas. Este projeto destaca-se pela preservação da identidade cultural e memória histórica da região, restaurando um edifício de importância significativa que, embora fundamental para a memória local, carece de infraestrutura para atender às necessidades contemporâneas. A dissertação encontra-se estruturada em quatro capítulos: “Contexto”, “A descoberta do Objeto”, “Diretrizes para intervir no Património edificado” e “O Projeto - Reabilitação e Expansão do Palácio de São Marcos”. Cada capítulo explora diferentes elementos relacionados com o tema, desde a análise do território e caracterização do objeto de estudo, passando pela reflexão teórica sobre o Património, até à apresentação da estratégia geral de intervenção e proposta de organização programática do edificado existente e da nova construção.
