dc.description.abstract | Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the most frequent disorders within child/juvenile psychiatry, with a prevalence of over 5% at school age. Its prevalence is slightly higher in males, but it can appear in any social background, race and family environment. It is considered a chronic disease, but symptoms may improve or even disappear in adulthood.Despite intense research on this disease in the last decades, which has led to a high number of scientific publications on the subject, there are still no objective criteria or specific tests to make an unequivocal diagnosis of the disease. Diagnosis is therefore based on behavioral criteria, as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5). Besides the difficulty of diagnosis, the symptoms of this disease, characterized by difficulty in concentrating, impulsiveness and difficulty in dealing with setbacks are often confused with tantrums and lack of education, which makes life difficult for these children and young people in a school environment and in social relationships. Therefore, it is important that this pathology is diagnosed and that both drug and behavioral therapies are applied as soon as possible, for a good evolution of this disorder and a better quality of life for these children and young people. It is also very important to involve parents and educators in this process. This paper reviews the characteristics of this pathology, its etiology, diagnosis and treatment. Some of the most frequent comorbidities and the evolution of this pathology with age are also mentioned. | eng |
