Percurso(s) da Antropologia Forense em Portugal na Bibliografia Médica Portuguesa (1945 a 1963)

Abstract

Atualmente, a antropologia forense apresenta desenvolvimentos relativamente à sua autonomia, que lhe conferiu um papel fundamental na identificação dos vivos e dos mortos e também na análise das lesões traumáticas ósseas. Nos seus primórdios em Portugal, esta área científica centrava-se em métodos e conhecimentos da antropologia física. Porém, a partir dos anos 20/30 do século XX e da entrada do governo português num regime salazarista, é notória a falta de informação e estudos sobre a história e o percurso da antropologia criminal/ forense. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a Bibliografia Médica Portuguesa (BMP), uma vez que esta publicação em série contém tópicos de interesse para conhecer melhor o percurso da antropologia forense no período de 1945 a 1963. Para isto, selecionaram-se três tópicos de interesse que continham “n” referências mencionadas: Antropologia Física e Biotipologia (n=120); Medicina Legal e Antropologia Criminal (n=140); e por fim, Intoxicações e Envenenamentos (n=44). Em consequência, procedeu-se à análise bibliométrica das referências bibliográficas em estudo (n=304), e estas foram organizadas, tendo em conta o ano de publicação, o volume e o tema, de forma a facilitar a análise e interpretação dos artigos com interesse para a antropologia forense. Para além disto, foi também realizado um estudo biográfico dos autores dos artigos (n= 134), bem como das revistas/jornais (n= 275) e livros (n=23) onde estes foram publicados. Este estudo permite afirmar que figuras como Leopoldina Ferreira Paulo, Maria Helena Galhano, Manuel Barbosa Sueiro, Eusébio Barbosa Tamagnini, Maria Augusta Neto e João Azevedo Neves realizaram estudos e pesquisas relevantes para a antropologia e antropologia criminal, alguns deles nas suas respetivas instituições de ensino, como a Universidade de Coimbra e do Porto. Esta análise combinada com a análise do conteúdo dos artigos permitiu conhecer o contexto da antropologia criminal e forense, num determinado ano ou período, desta amostra. Relativamente ao conteúdo dos artigos, foi possível verificar uma forte influência das missões antropológicas às colónias resultando em alguns estudos no âmbito da antropologia colonial. A variabilidade morfológica e constitucional dos indivíduos foi também sendo bastante abordada ao longo da BMP. Analisaram-se também trabalhos no âmbito da estimativa do perfil biológico, da antropometria e da tafonomia forense. Estes, ainda hoje, revelam um papel importante para a antropologia forense, pelo que o estudo da BMP contribuiu para contextualizar esta ciência num período pouco estudado.

Currently, forensic anthropology presents developments regarding its autonomy, which has given it a key role in the identification of the living and the dead and in the analysis of traumatic bone injuries. In its beginning in Portugal this scientific area focused on methods and knowledge of physical anthropology. However, from the 20/30 years of the 20th century and the entry of the Portuguese government into a Salazar regime, the lack of information and studies on the history and path of criminal/ forensic anthropology is notorious. The present work aims at studying the Portuguese Medical Bibliography (BMP), since it contains topics of interest for the study of the period 1945 to 1963. For this, three topics of interest were selected that contained "n" mentioned references: Physical Anthropology and Biotypology (n=120); Forensic Medicine and Criminal Anthropology (n=140); and finally, Poisoning and Poisoning (n=44). Consequently, a bibliometric analysis of the bibliographic references under study (n=304) was carried out, and these were organized, considering the year of publication, the volume and the subject, in order to facilitate the analysis and interpretation of the articles of interest to forensic anthropology. In addition, a biographical study of the authors of the articles (n= 134), as well as of the journals/journals (n= 275) and books (n=23) in which they were published, was also carried out. This study allows us to state that figures such as Leopoldina Ferreira Paulo, Maria Helena Galhano, Manuel Barbosa Sueiro, Eusébio Barbosa Tamagnini, Maria Augusta Neto and João Azevedo Neves carried out studies and research relevant to anthropology and criminal anthropology, some of them at their respective teaching institutions, such as the University of Coimbra and Porto. This analysis combined with the content analysis of the articles allowed us to know the context of criminal and forensic anthropology, each year or period, of this sample. Regarding the content of the articles, it was possible to verify a strong influence of the anthropological missions to the colonies resulting in some studies within the scope of colonial anthropology. The morphological and constitutional variability of individuals has also been widely addressed throughout the BMP. Studies were also analyzed in the fields of biological profile estimation, anthropometry and forensic taphonomy. These, even today, reveal an important role for forensic anthropology, so the study of the BMP contributed to contextualize this science in a period little studied.
