Authors: Janeirinho, Vânia; Lopes, Maria Helena; Rebocho, Lurdes; Paredes, Joana; Fernandes, Teresa Matos
romano. Não foi identificada qualquer relação
entre o tipo de estruturas, as oferendas
e a distribuição etária e sexual presente. No
a toda a área funerária, poderia indicar
uma alta mortalidade infantil na época,
e surpreende pela conservação de restos de
indivíduos muito jovens, face à fragilidade
dos seus ossos.; The content of 11 cremation funeral structures and one inhumation, founded during an intervention on a roman necropolis (dated between 1st and 2nd century), localized on the Gabriel Pereira’s High School (Évora, Portugal), was analysed in laboratory, giving emphasis to the osteological and odontological material. When the results from the direct observation were crossed with metric data and archeological material associated, several informations were obtained concerning burial rituals (especially when associated to cremation) and individual biological profiles, as much as the preservation state allowed. It was possible to observe a high variability
on the building and use of funeral structures,
as for their typology and the post cremation
process, common in roman burial areas in
Hispania as in other places from the Roman
Empire. No connection was found between
the structure types, the offerings found at
the polls and the age and sexual distribution.
However, it was noticed on this place a
tendency for high combustion degrees use,
an exclusive cremation in cadavers not skeletons
and a strong non adult presence most
of which less than one year old (5/10). This
last fact, if extended to all burial area, could
indicate a high infant mortality at that time,
though surprising for the conservation of
very young individuals remains, considering
their bones fragility.2012-01-01T00:00:00ZObesidade ante et post cirurgiaSilva, MarlenePadez, Cristinahttps://hdl.handle.net/10316/1093562023-10-11T08:37:10Z2016-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Obesidade ante et post cirurgia

Abstract: O presente estudo tem por objetivo
Destes, 67
eram mulheres e 15 eram homens.
e os que aderem à prática de exercício físico.; The study aim is to analyze the
weight loss after surgery in obese individuals,
check the degree of effectiveness and try
to understand why some patients can lose
weight and maintain it and others are not
able to lose and preserve weight loss. The
impact of the lifestyle and diet were also
evaluated after the surgery.
The data were collected in the surgery
service of Hospital de São Sebastião,
located at Santa Maria da Feira. Processes
from patients that underwent surgery more
than three years before were examined,
from which 82 had valid and complete
processes: 67 were women and 15 were men. The patients who lost weight and
stabilized were 81.3%, and the remaining
18.7%, after losing some weight, increased
more than 10.4 pounds. The physical activity
is associated to a greater decrease of the
body mass index (BMI), both for those who
practiced more than 30 minutes daily and
for those who practised less time, compared
to those who did not practice. The best
results were found among the patients who
met the diet requisites and practiced more
than 30 minutes of daily physical activity.
It follows that the higher levels of success
occur among those complying with the diet
and adhering to physical exercise.2016-01-01T00:00:00ZOsteoporosis and nutrition – a paleopathological insightCurate, Franciscohttps://hdl.handle.net/10316/1093552023-10-11T08:30:25Z2016-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Osteoporosis and nutrition – a paleopathological insight
Authors: Curate, Francisco
Abstract: The association of osteoporosis and
nutrition has long been documented, and
nutrition is acknowledged as a major risk
factor for bone loss, affecting bone health in
distinct ways. Both biomedicine and anthropology
(or, more precisely, paleopathology)
have strived to fully understand the contribution
of diet to bone health, especially the
relationship between the physiological economy
of calcium and bone maintenance.
Taking this into consideration, the present
article is intended to summarize and comment
the main empirical contributions of
paleopathology to the body of knowledge on bone health, specifically the relation between
bone loss and nutrition.; A associação entre a osteoporose e a
fisiológica do cálcio e a manutenção óssea.
perda óssea e a nutrição.2016-01-01T00:00:00ZEntheseal changes: the role of Portuguese researchCardoso, Francisca AlvesHenderson, Charlotte Yvettehttps://hdl.handle.net/10316/1084902023-08-30T09:36:42Z2017-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Entheseal changes: the role of Portuguese research
Authors: Cardoso, Francisca Alves; Henderson, Charlotte Yvette
Abstract: In this paper, we present a review
of research in Portugal on entheseal changes
(EC), widely used to record activity-patterns.
This is explored chronologically and thematically,
from the beginning of the research on
EC addressing the development of research
methods tested through their use in identified
collections, which sought to infer if
the physical activity leads to EC, to a workshop
in 2009, dedicated to EC, through to
the recently published outputs of the working
groups set up at that meeting. We will
also discuss the role of individuals and the
world class identified skeletal collections.
Key trends include the systematic development
of recording methods, their testing and the interrogation of the interplay of biology
and society in occupation. The recent outputs
of all the working groups will inform current
and future research, meaning that the
Portuguese role in the study of entheses will
be long-lived and continue to be of international
significance.; No presente trabalho, apresenta-se
uma revisão da investigação desenvolvida
em Portugal no que concerne ao tema
das alterações das enteses (AE), que têm
sido amplamente utilizadas para registar
padrões de atividade em populações do
passado.
Presentemente, as principais
