Biography
My academic journey began with a Pharmaceutical Sciences Degree (PharmD, 1991) and a Master's degree in Cell Biology (1995), Univ. Coimbra. I completed my doctoral studies in Pharmacology in 2002 at the same institution, with my PhD thesis work conducted at the Division of Hypertension, CHUV-UNIL, Lausanne, Switzerland (1998 -2001), supported by a competitive national fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). In 2017, I achieved my Habilitation in Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy of the Univ. of Coimbra (FFUC).
Currently, I am Associate Professor at the Dep.of Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Univ. Coimbra; Since 2008, I launched and coordinate the "Neuroendocrinology and Aging Group" at CNC/CIBB, Univ. Coimbra, that is contributing significantly to produce new knowledge in aging and age-related diseases research. I also hold influential positions in various organizations, including membership on the Scientific Council Health and Life Sciences of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and representation for Portugal in the European Research Area Forum, European Excellence Initiative. Additionally, I sit on the Board of Directors of the collaborative laboratory AccelBio, that foster Translation and Drug Discovery.
My career is also characterized by leadership positions. As Vice-rector for Research (Univ. of Coimbra; 2019-2023), I shaped the university's research strategy. As elected Vice President of the European network of 40 universities, CoimbraGroup, I promoted international collaboration. Additionally, as Director & President of the Scientific Council of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research, Univ. of Coimbra, I promoted interdisciplinary research and innovation. I was elected President in the Portuguese Society of Pharmacology, coordinator of the Depart. Pharmacology (FFUC). Furthermore, I coordinated the Science Communication Office at CNC-UC.
