Biography
Born Montemor-o-Velho, (Coimbra) 2/12/1959, finished de secondary school in the Liceu Nacional of Figueira da Foz in 1977. Then move to Lisbon to the Technical University of Lisbon, where he obtained the degree of Graduate in Physical Education and Sport [1978-1982]. Later, finished the Master's degree in High-Performance Training in Swimming in the Faculty of Human Kinetics, Technical University of Lisbon [1997]. Finished the PhD in Sports Science at the University of Coimbra (2009). Started cooperating with the Faculty of Sports Sciences and Physical Education, University of Coimbra, as a member of staff teaching since 2002, an​ assistant professor.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS: Practical Studies I – Swimming; Sports Option I and II in Swimming; Training Methods in Physical Conditioning; Planning and Periodization of Training.

POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMS: Long-term athlete development (Master program); Optimization of sports performance (PhD program); Training for High-Level Sports performance (MSc program)

The scientific interests are focused on the assessment, monitoring of training programs and athlete response. The influence of training on the immune system and the usefulness of noninvasive techniques to monitor training adaptation, and overtraining prevention, is a major concern. He is a member of ECSS and researcher of projects funded by FCT related to the influence of training load on immune function.

Published 55 papers in specialized journals and 16 papers in scientific international congress book of abstracts, wrote 4 chapters and 2 books. Oriented 5 PhD thesis in sports sciences.
Within the sport was the head coach of the swimming team of the Ginásio Club Figueirense 1986-1996.

Served as Assistant National Coach in Portuguese Swimming Federation and assume the post of Technical Director of the Regional Swimming Association Coimbra from 1997 to 2006 and was responsible for the pre-junior national project of Portuguese Swimming Federation.
