Biography
I am a full-time Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) since April 2015, member of the executive board of CIBIT (Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research) since June 2019 (a new research centre evaluated as Excellent by FCT-The Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in 2019), and member of the scientific council of ICNAS (Institute of Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health, University of Coimbra) since 2011. Before that, I was the director of the Centre for New Technologies for Medicine (CNTM) at the AIBILI (Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light and Image) (1999-2014), member of the board of directors at AIBILI (1999-2014), the coordinator of the research line "Image Processing, Functional Imaging and Phenotyping of Complex Diseases" at IBILI (Institute for Biomedical Research in Light and Image at FMUC)(2009-2013), and adviser to the board of directors at FCT (2014-2016). I also served as section secretary (2014-2017) and technical adviser (2010-2017) for the IEEE-EMBS Portuguese Chapter, member of the scientific council for the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research, University of Coimbra (IIIUC)(2012-2013) and ICNAS (2008-2009), and consultant for Alcon Research Institute (Texas, USA) (2009-2010). Keynote speaker at the XV Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing (MEDICON) and committee member for ten national and international conferences. Principal investigator (PI) in six research projects, co-PI in another two, and team member in 20 research projects, all of them with national or international competitive funding, and one industry-funded research project. Editor of one book, author of five full chapters and six sections of book chapters, over 40 journal papers (Scopus h-index of 18), 30 international conference proceedings, keynote speaker at one international conference, 12 invited talks, over 100 talks, and over 100 posters (international conferences only). Supervisor of three postdoctoral fellows (one ongoing), supervisor of one PhD student (ongoing), and co-supervisor of another two PhD students (ongoing). I organized/co-organized several national conferences and meetings, international session and special interest symposia and courses at several international conferences. I review for several international journals, national and international conferences and international funding agencies since 2004.
