Biography
Manuel Augusto Simões Graça. Ph.D. University of Sheffield, U.K. In my research I am interested in understanding the general ecology of streams. I am particularly interested in litter decomposition and brown food webs (litter as the energy source for communities). In this regard, I am interested in understanding factors ruling the the transference of energy and materials from the leaf litter to the consumers, fungi and invertebrates. Therefore, my studies include chemical changes in decomposing leaves, the ecology of the decomposers (aquatic hyphomycetes) and animals feeding on detritus (shredders). I am also interested in developing, improving and applying tools to assess environmental quality and the effect of pollutants in receiving system, particularly mining effects in freshwaters. Under this research topic, I am cooperating with regional environmental agencies and the industry.
