Published over 190 articles in journals cited in the JCR. Has published 18 book chapters and 2 books. Organized 15 scientific events and has participated in 79.. Participates and/or participated as Principal investigator in 10 projects and as a researcher in over 50 projects. Develops research in the areas of Soil Ecology and Ecotoxicology. In the area of Soil Ecology, his activities are focused on assessing changes in the biodiversity patterns of soil organisms (using trait-based approaches) and their effects on soil ecological processes and on the provision of ecosystem services derived from changes in land use, landscape changes and extreme climatic events in agroforestry systems. With regard to Soil Ecotoxicology, he works mainly in the Mediterranean and Tropical regions (mainly in Brazil) focusing on the assessment of ecological risk of pesticides, also studying the effects of the interaction between extreme weather events and changes in the risk of these compounds in the soil and potential communities effects on the provision of ecosystem services. Since 2009 he has been a collaborator of the Scientific Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues (PPR) of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) working on the elaboration of scientific opinions on risk assessment for the terrestrial compartment, especially in the development of specific protection goals based on the concept of ecosystem services. Since 2014 he is the president of the Thematic Panel on Phytosanitary products and GMOs of the Portuguese Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE). In addition to developing active research, he provides consultancy in terms of prospective ecological risk assessment (Navigator Portugal, ALTRI Florestal, Shell Thiogro and the Federal Environment Agency of Germany) and retrospective (PETROBRÁS). He is currently involved in several H2020, FCT and PDR2020 projects that implement holistic approaches, from a socio-ecological perspective, valuing natural capital as a way to increase the resilience of agricultural landscapes submitted to different stress factors, contributing to the development of different ecologically-based solutions to increase the provision of different ecosystem services, allowing a more sustainable management of the territory.
